(Reader’s Letter) – I’m an openly gay scout leader, and the Boy Scouts of America recently took away my membership because of my sexual orientation. It’s time to stand up to the Boy Scouts’ anti-gay policy.  When Troop 192, my former Boy Scout troop, invited me to join its adult leadership, I wasn’t sure I wanted to do it. Don’t get me wrong – I love scouting. I started as a child, and worked my way up to Eagle Scout, the Boy Scouts’ highest award. And to be invited back to my home troop had always been my dream. But...

At its core, Christian life aims to be an unbroken circle, in the words of an old hymn — a set of sacred traditions that run through generations of Sunday school stories, youth ministry morals and family gatherings sanctified by prayer. In modern America, that circle may not be completely shot, but it is wobbly and badly bent, according to a new landmark study conducted by the Pew Research Center. Released Tuesday, the survey of 35,000 American adults shows the Christian percentage of the population dropping precipitously, to 70.6%....

Father Gratien Alabi, from the Democratic Republic of Congo, is...

California’s system of direct democracy — the voter initiative process — has produced landmark laws reducing property taxes, banning affirmative action and legalizing medical marijuana. Now there’s a bid to declare that “the people of California wisely command” that gays and lesbians can be killed. You read that right. The “Sodomite Suppression Act,” as proposed, calls sodomy “a monstrous evil” that should be punishable “by bullets to the head or any other convenient method.” The...

Despite intensifying criticism from business leaders both within and outside of Arkansas, the state legislature on Tuesday passed its version of a measure billed as a religious freedom law, joining Indiana in a swirl of controversy that shows little sign of calming. The Arkansas bill, passed when the General Assembly concurred on three amendments from the State Senate, now goes to the state’s Republican governor, Asa Hutchinson, who expressed reservations about an earlier bill but more recently said he would sign the measure if it “reaches...
