The Architecture.

Built in the late 1950s, the Triangle Inn Palm Springs stands as one of Palm Springs' midcentury modern architectural treasures. Although many have assumedthat the Inn is a Cody design, it was actually designed by Hugh M. Kaptur, of Hugh M. Kaptur A.I.A. and Associates.

The Triangle Inn Palm Springs was one of Kaptur's first commercial designs. He ultimately designed well over 100 Palm Springs buildings and homes, most notably the William Holden home on Southridge Rimcrest, which is featured prominently in the William Holden Collection at the Palm Springs Art Museum.

When built, the Triangle Inn Palm Springs (initially known as the Impala Lodge) stood in stark contrast to the square box structures of the previous era.


I was trying to do something unique and modern - but also something that was an intrinsically connected to its desert setting," Kaptur recalls, "And I wanted to add a bit of whimsy. Hence the brightly colored modern interpretations of totems and the unique wood and metal architectural details."
